Dynamic Drives Giessen, a German startup, has unveiled the Intelectra, an innovative electric cargo vehicle that’s set to revolutionize urban transport.

The Intelectra resembles a mix between a pedaled dump truck and a modern motor carriage.

It combines the ruggedness of a pickup truck with the environmental benefits of electric power.

The Intelectra can carry up to 992 pounds (450 kg), including the rider, and is versatile enough to transport both passengers and cargo.

The design is complemented by tall, slender wheels with plastic rims, enhancing both the vehicle’s strength and its visual appeal.

    An overview of the Intelectra

The Intelectra's pickup truck-like bed can accommodate up to six Eurocrates and handle a payload of nearly 1,000 pounds (454 kg). This allows businesses to transport substantial loads within a compact, eco-friendly footprint, vastly reducing the environmental impact compared to traditional delivery trucks. The Intelectra made waves at last month’s Eurobike show, standing out among other electric cargo haulers. Unlike typical bikes or tricycles, the Intelectra features a distinctively forward-tilted, 4-foot-long (1,215-mm) rear cargo box encased in a robust aluminum frame.

One of the most notable aspects of the Intelectra is its design. The vehicle’s 64-inch (1,625-mm) wheelbase is complemented by a pedal drive that extends beyond the frame. This allows the rider to sit upright comfortably, grip the side-mounted handlebars, and pedal with ease. The adjustable rear suspension can be tailored to the load, ensuring a smooth and well-supported ride.

    Innovative powertrain

The Intelectra’s powertrain is a technological marvel. Unlike traditional pedal-powered vehicles, the Intelectra converts pedaling energy into up to 250 watts of electrical power through a generator located between the cranks. This energy charges a substantial 1,400-Wh+ battery, which powers two 125-watt rear hub motors. An intelligent multi-controller system manages motor output based on the rider's pedaling strength and cadence, creating a seamless integration of human and electric power.

    Maintenance and longevity

Dynamic Drives has designed the Intelectra’s powertrain to minimize maintenance. By eliminating chains, belts, and other mechanical drivetrain components, the vehicle reduces wear and tear. The company estimates that the drive system can operate for up to 30,000 kilometers (18,640 miles) without requiring maintenance, providing long-term reliability for users.

    Everyday usability

In terms of everyday performance, the Intelectra offers a commendable range. It can travel up to 58 miles (93 km) on a single charge, depending on the configuration and load. The battery recharges in approximately 90 minutes, ensuring minimal downtime during operational hours. Additionally, regenerative braking contributes to extending the range by converting some of the vehicle’s kinetic energy back into electrical power.

    Speed and legal considerations

The standard Intelectra is classified as a pedelec bike, reaching speeds of up to 15.5 mph (25 km/h) without a throttle. For customers seeking faster acceleration, Dynamic Drives can equip the Intelectra with a throttle, transitioning it into the electric scooter category. This modification necessitates registration, license plates, and a driver's license for legal operation.

Dynamic Drives also uses the Intelectra to showcase its modular pedal-by-wire electric drive system, known as the Intelectric Serial Hybrid System (SHS). This innovative system eliminates mechanical connections, offering versatility for various applications, including electric bikes and trikes. The SHS allows bike builders to place motors and battery packs according to their frame designs and provides customization options for large-volume buyers.

    Pricing and availability

    Pricing and availability

The Intelectra is set to enter the market this fall (Northern Hemisphere). The base model starts at €9,250 (approximately $10,171), with additional costs for batteries and options. Available add-ons include a passenger bench, a tonneau cover for security, and a covered canopy, which transforms the Intelectra into a modern-day covered wagon. In addition to the standard model, Dynamic Drives is working on larger and smaller variants. The company has already introduced a more powerful XL version and has shown photos of a medium-sized prototype undergoing testing. These developments suggest that Dynamic Drives is committed to expanding its range of innovative cargo solutions.
