Two individuals in China have publicly expressed regret after undergoing a controversial height-boosting surgery. The procedure involved breaking the bones in their legs.

Several media reports have revealed that a woman from Eastern Jiangsu province had spent a hefty amount (nearly $84,000) and even traveled abroad for a surgery she hoped would increase her height by around 5 inches.

Alongside the woman, a 29-year-old man from the Henan province in Central China also faced disappointment. He spent around $14,000 only to be dissatisfied with the results.

Notably, a 2006 regulation by China’s Health Ministry specified that individuals eligible for limb extension surgeries must have congenital deformities or differing bone lengths caused by an injury, tumor, or infection.

The hidden dangers of height-boosting surgeries

In the case of the woman, she began experiencing a multitude of physical problems instead of the relief and joy she anticipated. She even contracted a bone infection, which confined her to bed, hindering her ability to walk or run quickly.

The woman is now also facing breathing difficulties. In an interview with a leading publication, she revealed that her life had been completely ruined. She went on to say that if there was any kind of existing operation to reverse her condition, she would do so right away.

The man also voiced his dissatisfaction after the surgery. He noted that he ended up with legs of two different lengths. He expressed his frustration by saying that he is certainly not taller than before and, in fact, is now disabled.

Over time, various height-increasing surgeries have gained popularity in China. The primary motivation behind these surgeries is to address aesthetic preferences and societal pressures.

One of the most common types of surgeries is limb lengthening surgery and bone lengthening techniques. Both techniques have unique methods and carry potential risks such as infection, pain, and prolonged recovery times.

Previously, these kinds of surgeries have been under scrutiny for various medical implications. These have also affected the mental health of patients.

Understanding limb extension: procedure, benefits, and hidden risks

The limb extension procedure, according to medical practitioners, involves breaking the leg bones, separating them, and then fixing them back together. Often, a metal device is used to fix the bones, which is later stretched.

There have been instances where young people have become taller due to the surgery, but in most cases, there were side effects such as knee and ankle joint problems.
